Velázquez’s Birthplace is in the historic centre of Seville, in a pedestrian street that corresponds to the former Calle de la Gorgoja (now the Calle Padre Luis Maria Llop), one of the most important thoroughfares of the city’s old Moorish quarter.

The house, of about 6,200 square feet (580m2) in area, is built around two courtyards, each with its own fountain. One of the courtyards has an aljibe, an underground water cistern of possible Moorish origin. The house has two floors, connected by two staircases, and twelve rooms, three of which have fireplaces (although these are currently blocked off).
